Sheet Polishing Technology

In recent years, the demand for high-accuracy sheets is increasing in a wide range of fields, such as automobile, aviation, and semiconductor. By utilizing the polishing technology that we have accumulated for over 60 years, we meet the sheet-related needs in magnetizable materials and nonmagnetic materials, such as Inconel and titanium. We are capable of polishing sheets with a finished dimension of 0.5 mm or less.

Needs for Sheet Polishing

Needs for Sheet Polishing
We can procure even a single sheet
If special metal sheets are needed, they are generally made into the desired thicknesses through the rolling process. In developing and prototyping such sheets, more material and higher cost than necessary may sometimes be required because of constraints in material production lots even if the demand is only for a small quantity.
On the other hand, as we fabricate such sheets through polishing or grinding, procuring only the minimum required quantity becomes possible.
We can handle nonmagnetic materials
We can process even unmagnetizable materials, such as superheat resistant steel and titanium, into sheets by devising a processing method. When rolling a material that is likely to cause work hardening, such as Ti-6Al-4V, the pressurizing force required for processing increases as the material becomes thinner.
Therefore, the material needs to be annealed several times for the purpose of softening it, which causes an increase in cost. Even in the case of such materials, grinding them helps to reduce the generation of additional costs.

Know-How for Sheet Polishing

薄板研磨加工後曲がりを観察

When grinding sheets, it is important to grind without applying more processing stress (cutting resistance) than necessary in order to prevent the deformation of products. As the measures, we adjust the rotational frequency of grinding wheel, cutting depth, and table speed according to the material type and product specifications.
Particularly when grinding nonmagnetic materials, a grinding method (grinding wheel selection and chucking methods) suitable for each product needs to be adopted depending on the material type, shape, and quality condition.

In addition, we develop grinding wheels jointly with grinding wheel manufacturers according to work material types and processing conditions to pursuit optimum conditions for processing and quality.

Accuracy of Sheet Polishing

薄板研磨の測定

We have experience in polishing a sheet of 0.65 (thickness) x 100 x 500 mm with accuracy within a thickness tolerance range of 0.06 mm.
We can also finish sheets through the lapping process in order to prevent scratches from grinding.

Sheet dimensions we have processed in the past
Grinding: t = 0.25 mm
Lapping: t = 0.5 mm (We will accept the challenge of processing thinner sheets.)
